Project update: building Internet infrastructure climate resilience in Aotearoa

2 December 2025

The Internet Infrastructure Climate Resilience (IICR) research project looks at Internet infrastructure resilience in the context of climate change, with a focus on what is needed to support community resilience. In November, we hit a big milestone: the completion of our project Phase 2. We are proud of the work to date, and are excited to share this update with our broader community.

Over the past few months, the research team worked alongside a network of collaborators on three key issue areas in support of the project goals. IICR Network members have broad experience and expertise in Internet infrastructure and climate resilience, including people from the telecommunications industry, community organisations, and the public sector.

This phase of the research focused on three workstreams:

Mapping Internet resilience in action

The primary goal of this mapping is to bring together a shared understanding of work happening at different levels to inform our research. The research team has now produced a prototype interactive map of initiatives underway and will continue to work with the Network to add content in the next few months. We will also consider how this tool can be made available to a wider audience and what is needed to maintain it over time.
